Tschirley, David L.; Nijhoff, Jan J.; Arlindo, Pedro; Mwiinga, Billy; Weber, Michael T.; Jayne, Thomas S..
This paper examines the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response in southern Africa through the lens of the 2002/03 food crisis in the region. The authors outline improvements in information and operational procedures needed to enhance the response to future events. They also discuss national and regional trade regime changes that would reduce the need for emergency response, and consider what lessons the 2002/03 crisis may have for the role of Strategic Grain Reserves (SGRs).

Métodos de superação de dormência em sementes de flamboyant PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Zwirtes, Anderson Luiz; Baronio, Cléber Antonio; Cantarelli, Edison Bisognin; Rigon, João Paulo Gonsiorkiewicz; Capuani, Silvia.

RESPONSES OF COWPEA CULTIVARS TO SALINE STRESS 196
Romanoski, Vanessa; de Moura Souza Filho, Paulo Roberto; Badaró Pimentel, Adérico Júnior.
The cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] is widely cultivated in Northeast Brazil and stands out for its economic and social importance. Part of the cultivation area is affected by salt stress, which affects the performance of the crop. The effects of salinity can be mitigated with the development of tolerant cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate the behavior of cowpea cultivars under different levels of saline stress in the germination and emergence phases of the crop. Two trials evaluating the germination and emergence phases were conducted, under controlled conditions, in a factorial scheme with 11 cultivars and five solution of NaCl with concentrations ranging from 0 to 120 mM. There was a marked difference in the response of the...

Scorpionism by Hemiscorpius spp. in Iran: a review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dehghani,Rouhullah; Kamiabi,Fatemeh; Mohammadi,Malihe.
Abstract Scorpions are distributed throughout Iran and the genus Hemiscorpius is particularly important in this region. Hemiscorpius lepturus is the most significant species within the genus in the country. Since scorpionism provoked by Hemiscorpius comprises a medical emergency, the present study is focused on this important issue. In order to perform the present work, a review of the medical and health-related literature was carried out in several databases. The current findings indicate that six species of Hemiscorpius are found in 15 states of Iran, mainly in the south and southwest. Deaths caused by stings were reported only for two species. The morphological characteristics and geographical distribution of H. lepturus in Iran, its venom and the toxic...

Sowing on the emergence and early development of seedlings o baru PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Zuffo, Alan Mario; Jesus, Ana Paula Sousa; Dias, Saulo Gabriel de Faria.
The objective of this work to evaluate the influence of the position of baru seeds, the emergence and early seedling development. The test was conducted in a greenhouse experiment in randomized blocks, with five treatments (seeding position), with four replications, positions were: A - Hilo up, B - hilo down C - hilum and raphe aside, D - horizontal raphe up, E - horizontal raphe down. It was observed that the seeds deposited at the position B (heel down) provided better emergence and seedling development. We evaluated the emergence, speed of emergence index, plant height, stem diameter, root length, dry mass of air, root dry weight, relative AP/DC, FSPA/FSR and Dickson quality index. The emergence and early seedling development baru were influenced by...

Structural heart disease as the cause of syncope BJMBR
Guimarães,R.B.; Essebag,V.; Furlanetto,M.; Yanez,J.P.G.; Farina,M.G.; Garcia,D.; Almeida,E.D.; Stephan,L.; Lima,G.G.; Leiria,T.L.L..
We described the clinical evolution of patients with structural heart disease presenting at the emergency room with syncope. Patients were stratified according to their syncope etiology and available scores for syncope prognostication. Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the relationship between etiology of the syncope and event-free survival. Of the 82,678 emergency visits during the study period, 160 (0.16%) patients were there due to syncope, having a previous diagnosis of structural heart disease. During the median follow-up of 33.8±13.8 months, mean age at the qualifying syncope event was 68.3 years and 40.6% of patients were male. Syncope was vasovagal in 32%, cardiogenic in 57%, orthostatic hypotension in 6%, and of unknown...

The Evaluation of the Impacts of Title II Monetization Programs for Wheat and Crude Edible Oils in Mozambique, 1997-2007 AgEcon
Donovan, Cynthia; Zavale, Helder; Tschirley, David L..
From 1997-2007, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Title II monetization programs sold more than US$200 million of food aid wheat and unrefined vegetable oils in Mozambique. This research has three objectives: 1) to document the lessons learned from past monetization programs in Mozambique; 2) to identify the intended and unintended effects of monetization in Mozambique; and 3) to document indirect successes as a result of using monetization in Mozambique, if any. Monetization programs in Mozambique prior to 1997 demonstrated positive effects on market development and contributed to food security in a critical period. During later periods, the monetized food aid displayed the negative effects of uncoordinated food aid deliveries...
